The 2-hour school day, done at home
You've probably heard about Alpha School, where children finish core academics in about two hours and spend the afternoon on everything else. The worry is whether you can do that at home without it turning into two hours of screen time that doesn't add up to much.
What Alpha School does
Alpha says its students "complete core subjects in just two hours daily," using adaptive AI for one-on-one, mastery-based learning. Teachers become "guides" who focus on motivation and support. Afternoons go to workshops on life skills like leadership, grit, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. Alpha says its classes learn twice as fast and rank in the top 1% nationally.
It's a thoughtful model. It's also a private school, so you need a campus nearby, and Alpha's Austin campus lists tuition at $40,000.
At home: what changes and what doesn't
| Alpha School | Gallop at home | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Alpha campuses (Austin serves PreK-8) | Your home |
| Cost | Austin campus lists $40,000 tuition | $34/month for one child, $54/month for up to 4 |
| Academics | Core subjects in about 2 hours a day with adaptive AI | Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, K-12, planned daily by Today's Plan |
| The adult | A guide for motivation and support | You, with a weekly report, tutor's notes, and a five-minute tip |
| Afternoons | Life-skills workshops | Up to you |
We don't claim Alpha's results. What we can tell you is what makes a short, focused morning work, and how Gallop handles each piece.
What makes two hours enough
The right level. Time is wasted when work is too easy or too hard. Gallop's placement check finds your child's real level in each subject, below or above their enrolled grade.
Teaching before testing. Every skill opens with a short guided lesson, read aloud by a natural voice.
Mistakes fixed right away. When your child picks a wrong answer, Gallop says why that answer is wrong, specific to the mistake, and gives a "second look."
No gaps left behind. If a skill stays stuck, Gallop opens a Skill Drill that re-teaches it.
No time spent deciding. Today's Plan sets each child's session, and the course shows where they are: "Unit 2 of 7, Lesson 3 of 6."
One way to set up the day
This is just a starting point. Adjust it for your child.
- 9:00 Math and English on Today's Plan
- 10:00 Break, snack, outside
- 10:20 Science, Social Studies, Spanish
- 11:00 Done with academics
- Afternoon Reading, a project, chores, sports, time outside, and the five-minute tip from your dashboard
Your job is the guide's job: notice when your child is tired, celebrate a cleared grade, and look at the weekly report together.
FAQ
Is two hours a day enough?
Alpha says it is for their students. At home it depends on your child. The weekly progress report shows whether they're moving through their course, so you can adjust.
Do I need to be a teacher?
No. Gallop teaches each skill with a short guided lesson and reads it aloud. You're the encouragement, not the lecturer.
Can I do this with more than one child?
Yes. The Family plan covers up to 4 children for $54 a month, and each child gets their own plan at their own level.
What if my child is still learning to read?
The Reading Path works up a decoding ladder one step a day, and questions and lessons are read aloud.
