Florida homeschool requirements
Last checked October 2026. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Your county school district has the final say.
Ways to homeschool in Florida
The home education program under section 1002.41, Florida Statutes. Families can also enroll in a private school, including an umbrella school, or use a certified private tutor.
What you file, and when
A signed notice to your county superintendent within 30 days of starting, with each child's legal name, address and birthdate. When you stop, you send a termination notice within 30 days.
Subjects and days
Florida law doesn't set subjects or days for home education.
The portfolio
Keep it for two years: a log of educational activities made as you go, naming reading materials by title, and samples of your child's writing, worksheets or other work. The district can ask to see it with 15 days' notice.
The annual evaluation
Each year you choose one: a Florida-certified teacher reviews the portfolio and talks with your child, a nationally normed test, the state test, a licensed psychologist, or another method you agree on with the district.
Paying with PEP
Florida families with a PEP or FES-UA scholarship through Step Up For Students can buy Gallop's School-Year Pass and submit our receipt to Step Up for reimbursement. Details are on our homeschool page.
Where Gallop fits
Gallop's Records report prints, for each child and any date range, the days and minutes they worked, the subjects covered, each skill mastered with its date, and sample questions your child answered correctly. Minutes count time in Gallop only, not all of your teaching. Most parents add it to their own records rather than using it as their only record.
FAQ
Can Gallop's report go in my portfolio?
Yes, alongside your own log. Your evaluator decides whether it shows progress.
Can I try it first?
Yes. Try 7 sample questions, or start the 7-day free trial. No card needed.
