Ohio homeschool requirements

Last checked October 2026. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Your school district has the final say.

What you file, and when

A notice to your district superintendent within 5 days of starting, moving to a new district or withdrawing, then by August 30 each year. It has your name and address, your child's name, and your assurance that you'll teach the required subjects.

Subjects

English language arts, math, science, history, government and social studies.

Hours, records and testing

Since October 2023, Ohio law doesn't require set hours, records or testing for home education.

Where Gallop fits

Records aren't required, but a subject-by-subject record is handy if your district ever asks about the required subjects, or if your child returns to school.

Gallop's Records report prints, for each child and any date range, the days and minutes they worked, the subjects covered, each skill mastered with its date, and sample questions your child answered correctly. Minutes count time in Gallop only, not all of your teaching. Most parents add it to their own records rather than using it as their only record.
